URBAN MINISTRIES are not forgotten at HUGS. Our programs are aimed at
academic education of the unwed mother, and the continuing
supplemental support of her family, while she prepares to enter the market place,
with credentials that will make a difference in her ability to support her family.
One family at a time, HUGS helps to lessen the dependency on government and
crime for food on the table the needy family. We continuosly up-date partners with
specific and meaningful feedback about how their resources are being put to
work and making the difference in the lives of these families.
Joyce is a young mom of two...never married...who admits to mistakes in life...but heart a heart of gold. Yet when she
turned to the system to find help to receive her GED, she met with brick walls, like " you need to work 32 hours a week to
qualify for daycare subsidy", or "...day care is only available at our mauin college location, but all GED is performed at
a satelite location"..and so it went.
Hugs helped Joyce get going in Home Schooling program and partnered with an urban ministrry to split the costs of tuition
and secured a scholarship from a home school provider. Now, Joyce is working he way through the cirriculum at home with
no babysitting required.
Charles began a food ministry twelve years ago with 25 sack dinners for kid without parents in their daily lives. Now,
the program feeds 50,000 dinners to the same kids who eat in the free lunch program at lunch in the schools (59% of the typical
urban youth support in schools). Hugs is committed to helping Charlie feed these kids and to expand the program to other cities.
Hugs has begun by starting to work on securing discount food for these kids through other urban ministries.
So far, hundreds of $$ dollars have been contributed by HUGS to several URBAN causes, but SO much more can be done!
